Description
Formerly a Convent of the Order of Santiago, nestled in a medieval castle, the Pousada of Palmela has retained its majesty and the dignity of its former use, whilst offering luxurious accommodation. The cloisters remain intact within the surrounding gallery and are now used as a haven of peace and tranquillity for guests to enjoy. The former convent rooms are now sitting rooms and the convent refectory is now the hotel dining room.
The Hotel Palmela is situated 40 kms from Lisbon and its hilltop setting offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area.
This historic Hotel Castelo De Palmela has 28 rooms, including 7 superior rooms and 7 suites. All rooms have en-suite bathroom, air conditioning/heating, minibar, hairdryer, safe, telephone, cable TV and internet access.
The Pousada Palmela is set in a charming hilltop town centred round the castle which was built by the Moors following their reconquest in the 12th century. It lies at the heart of one of Portugal’s famous wine producing regions.

Location/Directions
Address:
Castelo de Palmela
2950-317 Palmela
Surrounding area:
- Setubal (8 kms): An industrious fishing town with a charming old centre. It’s striking 15th century Gothic-Manueline Church of Jesus is recognised as the earliest example of Manueline architecture in Portugal and it was described by Hans Christian Andersen as ‘one of the most beautiful small churches I have ever seen.”
- Troia (15 minute car ferry trip from Setubal): A stunning peninsula with 18kms of clean, soft sandy beaches, some of the cleanest in Portugal. Although parts of the island are built up you can still find untouched, secluded sandy beaches. There is also an 18 hole Championship golf course and restaurants famous for their seafood.
- Sesimbra (30 kms): A small fishing village overlooked by a Moorish castle. It has excellent beaches and seafood restaurants who serve the day’s catch of local fishermen.
- Arrabida National Park (19 kms): Stretching to the Atlantic Ocean, the park boasts a spectacular granite ridge and the area is a haven for wildlife. The Portinho de Arrabida, where the Park meets the Ocean, is a sheltered beach with crystal clear waters.
- Lisbon (40 kms): Europe’s second oldest capital city which oozes history and culture.
We had a “final” family holiday, with two children about to fly the nest, at the Pousada – it was a wonderful few days. The location is fantasic; we daulphin watched; spent an afternoon on a wonderful beach in the adjacent National Park; did a couple of runs from the Pousada long ridges with windmills and brilliant views. The Pousada itself is beautiful, service excellent, rooms beautifully appointed and atmosphere peaceful and relaxing. As one would expect the food and service was second to none.
We will go back; one suggestion of a weekend in Hotel Castelo de Palmela and the family and attachments are sure to join us.
I stayed at the wonderful Pousada Palmela over 30 years ago and always wanted to come back. I finally had the opportunity to return and it was even better. We were welcomed warmly, our room was comfortable, and dinner was extremely good. There are many things I like about the Pousada: the view, the blend of the old and the new, the courtyard, the breakfast buffet, the attentive and friendly staff, the location, and much more. This time there were some new additions, such as the separate little bar that included a Fado singer one of the nights we were there. Our entire trip to Portugal was memorable, and I cannot wait to return.
The location of the Pousada with its views across the surrounding countryside is absolutely superb. Once one is close to Palmela, further directions to the Pousada are not really required, all you have to do is look up to the top of the hill. Reception upon arrival was great and thereafter could not be faulted. Our rooms looked over the esplanade , used as the car park, towards the castle but any noise from the cars parking etc was not obtruisive at all. We looked at the evening meal menu but it seemed to be pricey for what was on offer. Possibly a table d’hotel menu could have offered a more attractive option. We ate in a couple of restaurants within a few hundred yards of the hotel, enjoyed them thoroughly and the stroll back up the hill towards the flood-lit castle was delightful. My overall comment is that the conversion of the convent has been very well done retaining its old features very tastefully. We only really visit Portugal for golfing breaks and therefore it is the location of the Pousada relative to the golf courses that is the deciding factor. If we play the local golf courses again, I would certainly stay at the Pousada de Castelo de Palmela.
I had stayed here before with a wine tasting group but this time with my wife. The staff at reception were great , the room comfortable and of course the views were to die for . We had dinner in the main restaurant which was very good so we would recommend this pousada
My Wife and I stayed again in this very nice hotel, we fully recommend the Great view, great history and so close to Lisbon. The staff are very friendly and we always feel welcome here as for any other Pousada in Portugal. We can fully recommend this Hotel.
The Pousada Palmela is an effortlessly elegant hotel with attentive, efficient and knowlegable staff and an accomplished kitchen. The atmosphere is relaxed and calm so it is a good place to recharge surrounded by magnificent architecture and scenery. The suites are well worth the extra cost and dinner in the restaurant should be enjoyed at least once during your stay. Front desk is welcoming and full of good advice about what to see and do in the area. I’ll be recommending it to all my friends and family.
