Description
Formerly the home of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Pousada of Lisbon is ideally located for exploring this fantastic city. It is situated in one of the most famous squares in Lisbon, the Praca do Comercio, which was particularly important during Portugal’s famous era of ‘discoveries’ as it was the home of many government departments which stood opposite the disembarkation point for Portuguese ships, filled with riches from the East and the Americas.
This square opens up to the Tejo River on one side and to the most historic parts of the city on the other three sides. From here the centuries old winding streets lead up to the Castle of St Jorge and beautiful Rossio Square.
The Pousada sits in a magnificent stately building and overlooks the Tejo River. It has been beautifully restored and is now transformed into a luxurious hotel with many of the building’s traditional features incorporated into the decor. It has 90 rooms, many overlooking the Tejo River, and offers excellent facilities, including a spa, swimming pool and fitness centre. The two bars and restaurant, with views over the square, provide the ideal location to relax and unwind in one of Europe´s oldest capital cities. The inner courtyard with a removable dome is another feature of this beautiful hotel.
The Pousada’s location, facilities and excellent restaurant also make it an ideal venue for conferences and meetings.
The Pousada hotel of Lisbon was invited to join the exclusive ‘Small Luxury Hotels of the World‘ Group in January 2015 in recognition of its unique location, luxury accommodation and excellent customer service.

Terreiro do Paço
Lisboa
Surrounding area:
- Sintra (25 kms): A UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its fairytale palaces, incredible vistas, and notable museum collections.
- Estoril (24 kms): A cosmopolitan coastal town which has maintained its somewhat faded grandeur. The picturesque beach of Tamariz is overlooked by a castle and has many cafes and bars. Behind the beach is the casino which was the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s James Bond and Casino Royal.
- Cascais (24 kms): A former fishing village, now a cosmopolitan beach town.
- Guincho (35 kms): The magnificent sandy Atlantic beach of Guincho has some of the best rollers in Europe – it’s a true paradise for surfers.
- Mafra (42 kms): When built, the gigantic Mafra Palace was intended to compete in magnificence and grandeur with Spain’s Escorial and St. Peter’s in Rome.
- Ericeira (54 kms): A charming fishing village with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, sandy beaches and excellent seafood restaurants.
- Queluz (14 kms): The Palace of Queluz is Portugal’s finest example of Rococo architecture.
- Setubal (48 kms): An industrious fishing town with a charming old centre. It’s striking 15th century Gothic-Manueline Church of Jesus is recognised as the earliest example of Manueline architecture in Portugal and it was described by Hans Christian Andersen as ‘one of the most beautiful small churches I have ever seen.’
- Troia (15 minute car ferry trip from Setubal): A stunning peninsula with 18kms of clean, soft sandy beaches, some of the cleanest in Portugal. Although parts of the island are built up you can still find untouched, secluded sandy beaches. There is also an 18 hole Championship golf course and restaurants famous for their seafood.
- Sesimbra (39 kms): A small fishing village overlooked by a Moorish castle. It has excellent beaches and seafood restaurants who serve the day’s catch of local fishermen.
- Arrabida National Park (40 kms): Stretching to the Atlantic Ocean, the park boasts a spectacular granite ridge and the area is a haven for wildlife. The Portinho de Arrabida, where the Park meets the Ocean, is a sheltered beach with crystal clear waters.
