  • Pousada Castelo de Estremoz – Hotel Rainha Santa Isabel

The magnificent Pousada of Estremoz is set in a 14th century Castle which has been home to many of Portugal’s royal families throughout the ages

    Description

The Castle of Estremoz, now the luxury Hotel Estremoz, was built on the order of King Dinis I of Portugal for his wife, Queen Isabel. Since the 14th century the castle has housed many of Portugal’s subsequent Kings and Queens and has played a constant role in major events in Portuguese history. It was from this castle that Vasco de Gama set out for India, becoming the first European to reach India by sea and, in the 19th century, it was a target for Napoleonic forces.

The Pousada of Estremoz’s sumptuous decor features silks and velvet fabric and many antiques which reflect the building’s historical importance and fascinating past.

Situated in the centre of Estremoz Hotel Rainha Santa Isabel has discreet modern conveniences which enhance the castle’s period features. The Pousada has an outdoor swimming pool which is surrounded by the castle’s battlements, an outdoor courtyard and private gardens from which to enjoy panoramic views over the Alentejan plains.

The Pousada Estremoz is one of the most luxurious in the group and guests cannot fail to be intrigued by its history.

This Hotel in Estremoz has 33 rooms, including 3 superior rooms and 1 royal suite. Many of the bedrooms have four poster beds. All rooms have en-suite bathroom, heating/air conditioning, minibar, bathrobes, hairdryer, desk, safe, telephone, Cable TV and internet access.

    Testimonials

6 testimonials for Pousada Castelo de Estremoz – Hotel Rainha Santa Isabel

    2. We staied for two nights in August 2016. The place is enchantable. Good the silence in the room and the polish. Staff at reception very professional and efficient. Amazing and high quality Breakfast. We recommend to visit Evora nearby. We hope to come back in this charming place.

    3. What a fantastic Pousada !! From when we pulled up in the square outside and the receptionist came out to help us with our bags, to the day we left for Cascais. The room was excellent, with a lovely view across the town. The staff were excellent, the bar and restaurant were also excellent. We also loved the pool and the grounds. This is an excellent Pousada, in a gorgeous location and ideal for a relaxing holiday.

    4. We arrived a little early which perhaps explained why we were allocated a rather dingy room with no view next to the conference room. We were subsequently re-located to a very pleasant room and adored our stay. The staff were very courteous and the restaurant experience excellent. We will certainly make a return visit and in the meantime recommend it to our friends.

    5. We are Spaniards, and we really love Portugal. The Pousada overcame our expectations. A really charming place for those who love history. It was as if the time had stopped in the middle of the XVIth or XVIIth century. The service was excellent. The room was clean, wide and very comfortable. To be honest, we did not find a single drawback. Congratulations!!!

We very much enjoyed the pousada. We actually rearranged our trip around our stay there, and were not disappointed. How often do you get to stay in an actual castle?? Our five year old son and twelve year old nephew thought it was fantastic. The views from the tower were amazing, and the room was incredible. It was like staying in a museum.
The staff were quite helpful, and non-intrusive. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, we wandered into Estremoz, which is an easy walk. Plenty of parking was available immediately in front of the pousada, which was a nice surprise. A highlight of the entire trip to Portugal was the little chapel of Saint Isabella, tucked away in a corner of the castle - a beautiful brush with history.
The pousada certainly wasn't inexpensive (by far the highest priced room we stayed in) but it was a good value - well worth it. We would love to stay there again one day!
